Many Voices, One Harmony

FAQs

What age do you need to be?
We accept all ages from age 18 and above. We will consider younger members if they are accompanied by their guardian, who is also an adult member.

What do we do each week at choir?
Choir runs for at least 2 hours every Monday during school terms. During this time we will break into groups to practice our parts then come together to see how it sounds together. We usually work on 1 – 2 songs per Monday. We may have extra sessions during the school holidays but we will communicate this if it is to occur.

Where do we practice?
Currently we are practicing at Kallangur, North Brisbane, QLD.

How do I know what I'm singing for each song?
Choir leader will record each part and load them onto a google drive for you to access. You will need to know if you are a Soprano, Alto or Mezzo (this will be determined by the music consultant) and then you can listen and learn each song. A link to the google drive will be provided in our closed Facebook group.

Do I need to do any practice outside of Choir sessions?
If you can practice during the week this will help us to improve our singing and be able to put our songs together faster. We know everyone is really busy and we understand that we may not always have a lot of extra time but it really helps the group when we can practice in our own time. Some ideas for getting in practice is in the car, the shower or whilst doing chores. Every little bit of practice, even a few mins per day will really help.

Solo and small group numbers will require extra practice sessions with the groups and the Music Consultant outside of our regular Monday practice. Members will need to organise extra practice with the Music Consultant.

How much are our fees?

$100 per 10 week term which works out to $10 per week. Members will be invoiced and fees are due in full at the beginning of term.

Where do my fees go?
Here is a list of things that our fees go towards:

  • Venue Hire

  • Liability Insurance

  • Administration Costs

  • Choir t-shirts

  • Printing costs

  • Costs for our yearly showcase

  • Song licenses and backing tracks

  • Sheet music rights where needed

  • Activities such as Vocal coaches, workshops etc

Will there be any performances?
Yes, we perform a yearly Showcase where we perform our choir group numbers as well as some small group, duets and solos. If other opportunities come up for performances we will see how many can attend before committing. Depending on numbers we can still attend events without all members. We have previously sung at UniSC Rise showcase, the 2022 Rockin' for the Homeless charity concert and the North Lakes and Mango Hill Christmas carols. For more information see our Events page.

Do I have to sing Solo?
Not at all. Everyone is given the opportunity to put their hand up for solos but if you would prefer to sing in the group only then that is absolutely fine.

Is Northside Soul Sisters a charity?

No, we are a Not for Profit organisation, or an incorporated association. We have an Executive committee made up of volunteers to run the choir.

What does it mean to be a not-for-profit?
Generally, a not-for-profit is an organisation that does not operate for the profit, personal gain or other benefit of particular people (for example, its members, the people who run it or their friends or relatives). The definition of not-for-profit applies both while the organisation is operating and if it closes down. A not-for-profit can make a profit, but any profit made must be used for its purposes. It can keep profits as long as there is a genuine reason for this and it is to do with its purpose. For example, a good reason to keep profits may be to save up for a new project, new infrastructure or a building, or to accumulate a reserve so it can continue to be sustainable.

How is the choir run?
The choir is managed by an executive committee. The committee is made up of 6 members who volunteer and give their time generously to make the choir a success. We hold an Annual General meeting toward the end of the year for anyone who would like to nominate to be on the committee.
